The National Science Foundation was established in 1950 to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense. In 1999, the Engineering and Integrative Activities Division of the NSF's Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate launched the Digital Government Research Program.

Digital Government partners leading-edge computer scientists with forward-thinking government agencies to explore and develop new information technologies that will improve the way government serves the American people. Digital Government grants fund a broad array of research, and can serve as the foundation for expanded studies under additional government funding.
