IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Small Grants for Exploratory Research: Hurricane Katrina
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2005/nsf05053/nsf05053.jsp
In light of the recent hurricane Katrina, the Human and Social Dynamics
priority area (HSD) announces that it will accept Small Grants for
Exploratory Research (SGER) proposals. (For additional information about
SGER proposals, see the Grant Proposal Guide, Section II.D.1.)
Small Grant for Exploratory Research (SGER) proposals are for
small-scale, exploratory, high-risk research in the fields of science,
engineering, and education normally supported by the NSF. The SGER is one
mechanism NSF will use to support fundamental science and engineering
projects whose results may enable our country to better mitigate, prepare
for, respond to, and recover from catastrophic events.
Researchers interested in submitting SGER proposals to HSD should contact
one of the following Program Directors, PRIOR TO SUBMISSION, to discuss
their ideas.

The GENI Initiative
http://www.nsf.gov/cise/geni
The Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering
(CISE) is planning an Initiative called Global Environment for Networking
Investigations or GENI to explore new networking capabilities that will
advance science and stimulate innovation and economic growth. The GENI
Initiative responds to an urgent and important challenge of the 21st
Century to advance significantly the capabilities provided by networking
and distributed system architectures.
A SPECIAL NSF REPORT: UNDERSTANDING DISASTERS
http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/disasters/index.jsp
Without a comprehensive understanding of disasters, it is impossible to
prepare for them. Knowledge is critical, whether for determining how
weather systems develop, estimating the path of volcanic debris,
recognizing triggers before a ground-shaking seismic event, or even
gauging how an individuals decisions from a utility employee to a public
official can put entire communities at risk.
