REPORTS OF INTEREST FROM THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES:
How dramatically will technology change research universities? A new National
Academies report, "Preparing for the Revolution: Information Technology and the
Future of the Research University," examines this issue and how university
officials should prepare.

Just building more roads, airports, ports and railroads will not eliminate
bottlenecks in the nation's freight transportation system, especially because
construction projects will become more difficult and expensive in the future,
says a new report from the National Academies' Transportation Research Board.
Instead, government agencies should make better use of the existing
transportation infrastructure and identify and fund new construction projects
with the biggest payoffs. The federal government should develop a comprehensive
national policy to promote better freight system management and spending
decisions.

Last year's terrorist attack on the World Trade Center exposed the Internet's
possible vulnerabilities, says a new report from the National Academies'
Computer Science and Telecommunications Board. Although overall damage to the
Internet was minimal, the destruction of communications equipment and networks
during the building's collapse point to the need for Internet service providers
and users to develop better emergency plans in coordination with local
authorities, including a means of restoring service remotely in case of
electrical power failure (audio available, requires free RealPlayer).

Computerizing health information and records, expanding access to health
insurance, and reforming medical liability regulations are among the goals of
demonstration projects outlined in a new Institute of Medicine report. The
Institute developed the projects to test new strategies for solving critical
health care problems at the request of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy
Thompson.

established a new Web site for the Committee on Emerging Issues and Data on
Environmental Contaminants. The new site features more information about the
committee's upcoming public meetings, a periodic newsletter and links to
organizations that are involved in related issues.
